Licensing Manager

Reporting to the Benjamin and Irma Weiss Director of Researcher Resources, the Licensing Manager is the primary contact in overseeing all photographic permissions and rights clearances for works in the Museum’s collection via our licensing partners and for requests relating to traveling exhibition venues, outside publishers, other museums, scholars and commercial clients. The position also works on relevant licensing projects as needed. 


  • Manages digital assets associated with the permanent collection and provides them for use by our licensing partner as well as museum staff as needed
  • Maintains and supports strategic partnership with our licensing partner
  • Generates licensing arrangements with commercial vendors as needed; administers Hopper licensing
  • Serves as the Museum’s contact for artist agencies such as ARS, VAGA, etc. regarding permissions and copyright directly related to works in the permanent collection, excluding permissions and copyright requests by the Marketing, Retail, and Publications departments 
  • Reviews and advises, with the guidance of General Counsel, the Museum on copyright law and issues as relates to museum usage and practices
  • Manages and tracks permissions obtained, fees, uses, and tracks royalties/income from assets in the Whitney collection that are licensed
  • Researches copyright holders for works in the permanent collection and enter this data into collections management system.  Keeps copyright holder information current in TMS. Liaises with Permanent Collection Documentation Office when any discrepancies that are discovered
  • Participates as a member of the Rights & Licensing Committee and assists with special licensing projects when applicable


  • B.A. in Art History with experience in Rights and Reproductions management. MLIS and/ or JD degree is preferred with an area of focus on licensing and rights and reproductions, or related experience
  • Knowledge of U.S. copyright laws, experience with licensing of images and requesting rights for print and electronic publications helpful
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills; attention to detail; ability to work under deadlines; accountability; professionalism; collegiality; and knowledge of modern and contemporary American art
