The Whitney’s summer internship program is a full-time, paid, nine-week session primarily for undergraduate students. The program includes training, direct work experience, professional development, and a weekly speaker series. The 2025 Summer internship will be hybrid, meaning interns will work onsite at least three days per week. The program will begin on Monday, June 2, and end on Friday, August 1. Participants must be available Monday through Friday for nine consecutive weeks, five days per week.

Expected Projects & Assignments

  • Assist department staff with work on upcoming exhibition catalogues, potentially including proofreading, research, and image-gathering tasks 
  • Copyediting and proofreading for exhibition graphics and institutional ephemera  
  • Analysis of image rights status for major backlist titles 
  • Research in support of ongoing department initiatives relating to editorial style 
  • Attend project meetings for upcoming books and exhibitions when possible


Skills & Qualifications

  • Prior editorial experience and a demonstrated interest in editing and publishing 
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently is essential 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office a must; Photoshop useful but not necessary  
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills 
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Undergraduates currently enrolled in accredited academic year programs are eligible
  • Applicants must have completed a minimum of one year’s worth of academic coursework; undergraduate freshmen are not eligible
  • While a demonstrated interest in art and art history is preferred, students in all majors are encouraged to apply
  • Previous museum experience is not required

  • Overview of proofreading marks/PDF markup procedures and institutional style

  • Additional guidance for individual projects as necessary

Compensation
Interns will be paid a stipend of $6,500 for full participation.
