Be a part of our dedicated team of Sales Associates at the premier Museum of the 20th and 21st Century American Art. We are looking for friendly and outgoing people to join our team for the duration of the Whitney Biennial 2024: Even Better Than the Real Thing.

The Whitney Biennial—a showcase of what’s new in American art—returns to the Whitney for its eighty-first installment in March 2024. Introduced in 1932 by the Museum’s founder, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, the Biennial charts developments in art of the United States and is the longest-running exhibition of its kind. More than 3,600 influential and innovative artists have participated in a Whitney Biennial or Annual.

Reporting to the Retail Experience Manager, the Part-Time, Temporary Retail Sales Associates will delight customers with product knowledge and customer service skills, while achieving robust sales goals and developing a loyal onsite and online audience for the Whitney Museum Shop.  The associates will actively maintain merchandise presentation around a broad museum program and work with other front facing departments, such as Membership, Visitor Experience, and Security to “own” the customer experience in a fast paced, high traffic environment. This is a temporary assignment through August 18, 2024.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing impeccable customer service by engaging, understanding and fulfilling the needs of customers.
  • Efficiently and accurately process sales transactions across multiple sales channels and technology platforms.
  • Responsibly handle cash and credit card transactions.
  • Open and close cash drawers.
  • Actively maintain high standards of merchandise presentation; visually and verbally.
  • Coordinating the breakdown of the retail shop for events; perform inventory counts as scheduled; and other related duties as assigned
  • Restocking of supplies and product; inventory maintenance
  • Assist in receiving and packaging.
  • Mail order processing (online and in store)
  • Providing impeccable customer service by engaging, understanding and fulfilling the needs of customers.


  • A minimum of 1-2 years of customer service experience in a public-facing environment, preferably in a Retail or Hospitality setting
  • Friendly, outgoing, and professional attitude
  • Must be able to work weekend, holidays, early and evening hours
  • Strong sales experience and ability to develop customer relations
  • Previous POS and inventory experience , including accurate cash handling skills
  • Interest in public facing customer service interactions
  • Excellent communication and empathetic listening skills
  • Proficiency in Spanish is preferred; a second language is a plus
  • Works well under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, including outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to lift and carry moderate weights of merchandise
  • Interest in arts and cultural institutions is a plus
  • High School Diploma, college degree preferred

Compensation & Benefits:

  • This is a part-time position (up to 27 hours per week) with a starting wage of $22.50 per hour
