The Whitney Museum of American Art seeks a Senior Gallery Assistant to join the Visitor Experience team. The Senior Gallery Assistant will provide day-to-day leadership to the Museum’s 50+ Gallery Assistants, the public-facing team responsible for providing visitors an exceptional in-gallery experience. The Senior Gallery Assistant reports to the Managers of Visitor Experience, and has responsibility for supervising Gallery Assistants in the absence of the Managers. The Senior Gallery Assistant will be primarily located on the gallery floors, serving as the point person for staff or visitor concerns in the galleries.

  • 5 days a week, 35 hours per week
  • Weekends, holidays, early and evening hours regularly required
  • Hourly position; opportunities available for overtime


  • Initial point person for escalation of visitor or staff concerns in the galleries
  • Assists with the preparation of materials needed for the smooth running of the Gallery Assistants team each day
  • Assists with training, motivating, developing, and assessing Gallery Assistants
  • Administrative duties including, but not limited to, creating daily post and break schedules, updating personnel files, adding event shifts to weekly schedules, and ordering supplies. Responsible for additional administrative duties, as needed.
  • Knowledgeable about the Museum collection, events, visitor policies, and exhibition programs
  • Leads by example with professional and positive demeanor. Sets the service standard for the Gallery Assistant team
  • Supervises Gallery Assistants in the absence of the Managers


  • Minimum of 2 years customer service experience, with supervisory experience a plus
  • Friendly, outgoing, and professional attitude
  • Genuine interest in customer service
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Problem solver and multi-tasker who works well under pressure
  • Strong work ethic and high level of integrity
  • Ability to work collaboratively and to encourage teamwork among direct-reports
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite or comparable software
  • Flexibility in scheduling – will be required to regularly to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and overtime as needed for special events
  • Interest in visual arts
  • B.A. preferred but not required
  • Bi-lingual a plus
